Bhutan–Mongolia Relations Enter New Era After King’s 2024 Visit

Bhutan and Mongolia held their first bilateral consultation in Ulaanbaatar, building on His Majesty The King’s historic 2024 State Visit. Both nations pledged deeper cooperation in education, culture, agriculture, and people-to-people ties.

The first bilateral consultation between Bhutan and Mongolia was held in Ulaanbaatar on 07 August 2025. The bilateral consultation were co-chaired by Foreign Secretary Pema Choden, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade of Bhutan, and State Secretary MUNKHTUSHIG Lkhanaajav of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Mongolia.

Recalling the historic State Visit to Mongolia by His Majesty The King in July 2024, the two countries reaffirmed their commitment to further deepen relations based on mutual understanding and partnership. Discussions between the two sides focused on education, culture, agriculture and enhancing people-to-people exchanges.

As Bhutan and Mongolia mark this new chapter of engagement, both sides expressed optimism that the consultation would serve as a platform to forge greater ties of friendship and cooperation.

His Majesty’s visit, which came at the invitation of the President of Mongolia, underscored the shared values of the two Himalayan and Central Asian nations, bound by deep-rooted Buddhist heritage and a mutual appreciation for cultural preservation.

During the visit, His Majesty engaged in high-level discussions with Mongolian leaders, visited key cultural landmarks including the Gandantegchinlen Monastery, and met with members of the Bhutanese community in Mongolia. The trip also saw the signing of cooperation agreements aimed at strengthening collaboration in areas such as education, cultural exchanges, and sustainable agriculture. His Majesty’s presence in Ulaanbaatar was warmly received, with traditional Mongolian hospitality reflecting the depth of goodwill between the two peoples.
