Bhutan to Launch First International Travel Mart in June 2026
Bhutan will host its first International Travel Mart in from 11-13 June 2026, aiming to boost sustainable tourism, attract global partners, and strengthen its high-value travel strategy.
Bhutan is set to take a significant step in its tourism development with the launch of the inaugural Bhutan International Travel Mart (BITM), scheduled for 11–13 June 2026 in Zhichenkhar, Thimphu. The event marks the Kingdom’s first large-scale international travel trade platform, aimed at strengthening Bhutan’s position as a high-value, sustainable tourism destination.
Organised by the Department of Tourism Bhutan under the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment Bhutan, with support from the Association of Bhutanese Tour Operators, BITM is designed as a business-to-business (B2B) marketplace. It will bring together international travel buyers, media, and tourism professionals with Bhutanese tour operators and service providers.
A Strategic Platform for Global Engagement
The three-day mart will function as a networking and partnership hub, enabling direct engagement between Bhutanese stakeholders and international markets. By facilitating these connections, Bhutan aims to expand its global reach while maintaining its long-standing “high-value, low-volume” tourism policy.
Participants will also have access to a digital platform providing real-time updates on schedules, activities, and curated insights into Bhutan’s tourism offerings. This integration of digital tools reflects a broader effort to modernise the country’s tourism ecosystem while preserving its core values.
Reinforcing Bhutan’s Sustainable Tourism Model
BITM 2026 will place strong emphasis on sustainability, aligning with Bhutan’s development philosophy of Gross National Happiness. The Kingdom’s tourism approach prioritises environmental conservation, cultural preservation, and community well-being—principles that increasingly resonate with global travel trends.
Rather than targeting mass tourism, the event is expected to attract high-value travellers and businesses interested in eco-conscious and culturally immersive experiences. Bhutan’s positioning as a destination for meaningful travel experiences is central to this strategy.
Economic Opportunities and Sector Growth
Beyond branding and visibility, BITM is expected to generate tangible economic benefits. By connecting local businesses—including hotels, restaurants, tour operators, and artisans—with international buyers, the event could open new revenue streams and investment opportunities.
Industry observers note that such exposure may also stimulate improvements in tourism infrastructure, particularly in areas such as eco-friendly accommodation, nature-based experiences, and community-led tourism initiatives. These developments would support both job creation and capacity building within the sector.
Elevating Bhutan’s Global Tourism Profile
The introduction of BITM comes at a time when destinations worldwide are recalibrating toward more sustainable tourism models. Bhutan’s long-standing emphasis on responsible travel positions it well within this global shift.
If successful, the mart could become a recurring fixture in the regional travel trade calendar, helping to elevate Bhutan as a leading example of how smaller destinations can engage internationally without compromising their values.
Looking Ahead
As Bhutan prepares to host its first international travel mart, expectations are high that BITM 2026 will serve as a catalyst for deeper global engagement. By combining strategic partnerships, sustainable practices, and cultural authenticity, the event reflects a broader ambition: to shape a tourism sector that is both economically viable and environmentally responsible.
For Bhutan, BITM is not just a trade event—it represents a deliberate step toward defining the future of tourism on its own terms.
