Dragon Fury Introduces a Revised Route
This year’s Dragon Fury follows a revised route, reversing the direction used for some earlier editions by starting in the capital and ending in Wangdue Phodrang.
The point-to-point race is open to Bhutanese cyclists, international participants and expatriates living in the country. Road-bike cyclists have also been included, widening participation beyond the mountain-biking community traditionally associated with the event.
Race arrangements include designated marshal points, electronic chip timing and medical support. Prizes will be awarded to the leading cyclists in the men’s and women’s categories, with additional recognition for the youngest and oldest participants.
Cyclists who complete the course will receive a certificate, medal and T-shirt. The total prize purse is Nu 170,000 (approx. USD 1,790).
Dragon Fury forms part of Bhutan’s growing use of running and cycling events to connect sport with local tourism. The revised route gives participants a journey from Thimphu towards Wangdue Phodrang, with the finish line located within the festival venue.
Communities From 15 Subdistricts Join the Festival
The Sha-Festival brings together communities from Wangdue Phodrang’s 15 gewogs, or subdistricts.
Displays will feature local agricultural products, traditional knowledge and goods produced by cottage and small-scale enterprises. The programme also includes cultural performances and live entertainment by Bhutanese artists.
One of the scheduled activities is Molay Drendhur, a local beauty competition. Together with the cultural programme and community stalls, it is intended to present different aspects of Wangdue Phodrang’s identity to residents and visitors.
For small producers and community groups, the festival provides a public platform to introduce their products to a wider audience. It also gives visitors an opportunity to encounter the district through its food, crafts and contemporary cultural expressions rather than through a sporting event alone.
Combining Sport With a Community Festival
Holding Dragon Fury and the Sha-Festival at the same time connects the race directly with its host community.
Cyclists and accompanying visitors arrive at a venue where local producers and performers are already gathered. Festival participants, in turn, gain an audience that includes athletes and visitors from outside the district.
The event is organised jointly by the Department of Tourism under the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Employment, the Wangdue Phodrang District Administration and the Bhutan Olympic Committee.
The combined format reflects an effort to use sporting events for more than competition. Its wider value will depend on participation, benefits for local enterprises and the organisers’ ability to build the Sha-Festival into a consistent platform for Wangdue Phodrang’s communities.
