Pema Deki Brings Bhutanese Heritage to the World of Luxury Watches

From Trashigang to Melbourne, Pema Deki is redefining Bhutanese luxury through Eternal Watches—blending heritage, symbolism, and craftsmanship into timeless pieces that carry Bhutan to the world.

Since relocating to Melbourne, Australia in 2018, Pema Deki from Trashigang, has been quietly building something far more meaningful than a watch brand. Through her company, Eternal Watches, she is crafting timepieces that carry the spirit of Bhutan across borders—each design a reflection of identity, memory, and cultural pride.

What began as a personal journey has evolved into a distinctive brand that bridges Bhutanese artistry with contemporary watchmaking.

A Brand Rooted in Culture and Meaning

Eternal Watches draws deeply from Bhutan’s rich artistic heritage. Inspired by sacred symbols such as the Vajra, each piece integrates cultural storytelling into minimalist, elegant designs.

Crafted in Australia using high-quality Swiss and Japanese components—including sapphire crystal glass and stainless-steel cases—the watches balance precision engineering with emotional depth. Produced in limited quantities, they are designed not only to be worn, but collected.

Collections such as ET 087, ET 097, Royal Green, Royal Silver, Emerald, and Thunder Dragon reflect this philosophy—each piece a quiet statement of Bhutanese identity.

Creating Something Timeless

Pema’s motivation for starting the brand was both personal and cultural.

“Bhutan has beautiful brands in textiles and handicrafts, but there has never been a commercial watch brand representing our identity on a global stage. I saw an opportunity to create something timeless both literally and symbolically.”

Her inspiration also stems from personal memory:

“A watch is not merely an accessory; it marks moments, milestones, and memories. My first gift to my husband was a wristwatch, and it remains one of his most treasured possessions. That emotional permanence inspired me to create timepieces that carry heritage, sentiment, and story, not just function.

“Luxury, for us, is not about excess. It is about meaning, craftsmanship, and rarity.”

The Influence of Bhutan

Pema credits her upbringing in Bhutan for shaping her approach to entrepreneurship.

“Bhutanese culture is rooted in resilience, humility, and long-term vision. We are raised to persevere quietly and to value substance over noise.”

She notes that building a brand—especially one centred on identity—requires patience.

“My heritage has given me the discipline to endure challenges, remain grounded, and focus on building a brand with lasting value rather than short-term visibility.”

Challenges of Building a Brand Abroad

Establishing a luxury watch brand as a Bhutanese entrepreneur overseas has not been without its difficulties.

The biggest hurdle has been access—to capital, networks, and industry trust.

“Yet, I view this as an essential part of the journey. Growing deliberately and independently has given us the freedom to stay true to our vision, maintain authenticity, and keep full creative control.”

The watch industry itself presents further complexity—from technical knowledge and supply chains to building credibility in a space where purchases are driven as much by emotion as by craftsmanship.

Reframing Bhutanese Art on the Global Stage

At the heart of Eternal Watches is a deeper mission: to present Bhutanese culture in its true form.

“Bhutan possesses a sophisticated artistic tradition intricate symbolism, sacred geometry, and centuries-old craftsmanship. Yet internationally, Bhutanese art is often misunderstood or grouped with other Himalayan cultures.

“Our mission is to present Bhutan as it truly is an independent nation with a distinct and refined cultural identity. Each design draws from authentic Bhutanese motifs and reinterprets them into contemporary forms, allowing tradition to exist elegantly within modern luxury.”

Competing Through Significance, Not Scale

Rather than mass production, the brand focuses on meaning and rarity.

“We don’t compete on scale; we compete on significance.”

Each watch is intentionally produced in limited numbers, reinforcing both exclusivity and emotional value.

“By producing only a few hundred pieces per model, we preserve exclusivity and ensure that ownership feels personal. Scarcity enhances emotional and collectible value.”

A Global Audience with Cultural Roots

Eternal Watches resonates with a niche but growing audience—those who value story as much as design.

This includes the Bhutanese diaspora, international travellers who have experienced Bhutan, and collectors seeking meaningful craftsmanship.

“We reach them primarily through digital platforms and direct engagement, maintaining a close relationship with our community.”

The brand currently focuses on quartz timepieces for reliability and accessibility, with plans to expand into mechanical collections in the future.

Growing with Intention

Despite being in its early stages, the brand has seen encouraging reception.

“We are still in an early but promising phase. Our strongest support comes from Bhutanese living abroad, who see the brand as a symbol of identity.”

Growth, Pema emphasises, is intentional rather than rapid.

“Growth has been organic and we are building intentionally rather than rapidly.”

Pricing with Purpose

The pricing strategy reflects the brand’s commitment to quality and sustainability.

“Our pricing reflects small-batch production, quality materials, and operational sustainability.”

Without the benefits of mass production, each piece carries the weight of careful design and cultural authenticity.

“We price to preserve quality and long-term brand integrity.”

A Vision for the Future

Looking ahead, Pema envisions Eternal Watches becoming a recognised Bhutanese luxury brand on the global stage.

“We aim to produce highly collectible mechanical models, establish boutique spaces in Bhutan and Australia, and collaborate deeply with Bhutanese artists and craftsmen.”

Ultimately, her aspiration is clear:

“Made in Bhutan.”

Carrying Bhutan Beyond Borders

Bhutan is widely known for its philosophy of Gross National Happiness and its environmental leadership. Yet, as Pema notes, its artistic depth remains underrepresented globally.

“However, our artistic depth and design sophistication are less widely understood. Through our timepieces, we hope to elevate Bhutanese culture into the global luxury conversation demonstrating that a small Himalayan kingdom can produce objects of refinement, story, and enduring value.”

For those who may never set foot in Bhutan, these watches offer something quietly profound—a way to carry a piece of the country’s spirit, wherever they are.
