Thai PM Prayut To Discuss Trade And Investment During Visit To Bhutan

He will be visiting Bhutan for two days from July 19 to 20.

Thailand’s Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha is set to arrive in Bhutan tomorrow for talks with Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay on trade and investment in Bhutan.

During his two-day visit here, the two intend to discuss public health, agriculture, tourism and Sufficiency Economy philosophy, according to a press statement from the Thailand Cabinet.

Prayut will also pay courtesy calls to His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema, as well as preside over the opening ceremony of a new royal consulate of Thailand in Thimphu.

According to the press statement, Prayut will also pay a visit to the National Memorial Chorten and Bhutan’s shop for One Gewog One Product, which parallels Thailand’s One Tambon One Product scheme, an entrepreneurship scheme aimed to support locally made and marketed products of each of Thailand’s sub-district.

The Nation reported that Prayut is expected to extend Thailand’s support to build an eye, ear, nose and throat medical centre in Bhutan by next year.

Diplomatic ties since 1989

Thailand is Bhutan’s second-top importer, accounting for US$24 million of Bhutan’s total imports worth US$455 million.

Bhutan established formal diplomatic relations with Thailand in 1989, making it one of 52 countries that enjoy diplomatic relations with Bhutan.

The two Kingdoms share a number of commonalities, such as a deep respect for the monarchy, spiritual heritage, a legacy of sovereign independence and close communal bonding despite geography and distance.
