The Hotel That Made Me Forget My Phone Existed

Perched above the Paro valley, this hilltop retreat in Bhutan is where luxury meets stillness — and where time quietly forgets to move.

Okay, so I didn't expect to fall in love with a hotel this fast — but here we are. Yes, I am talking about Dawa at Hilltop by Heeton, located in Dobara, Bondey, Paro, just 15 minutes from Paro town.

Settled above the Paro valley, Dawa at Hilltop by Heeton doesn't try to make a grand entrance. Instead, it unfolds quietly along winding roads, revealing itself in layers — until a sweeping view makes you realise the journey was just the beginning of the experience.

Arrival Vibe

The sun had already dipped below the skyline by the time I pulled up, and the first thing that washed over me — honestly, before I even stepped out of the car — was a profound sense of calm. The entrance made no grand gestures; no flashing lights, no bold flourishes. Just a quiet, understated elegance, like a secret the night was gently keeping.

A staff member appeared almost silently, greeting me with a warm, soft towel before leading me to a low sofa in the corner, where a cup of steaming apple cider tea was already waiting. That first sip — sweet and comforting — began to melt the fatigue of the long journey from Haa, though my bones still ached with tiredness.

Even so, the reception hall refused to be ignored. It was magnificent — not in a loud or showy way, but in the manner of a hushed gallery. And there, right at the threshold, stood a giant prayer wheel, as if it had been quietly chanting blessings into the air for centuries. The kind of stylish, considered space that makes you want to dress up and order something expensive.

Within seconds, I knew. This stay was going to be something special.

Room Tour

Stepping into the room felt like walking straight into a Pinterest board — every detail perfectly placed. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed the night like a living painting, while crisp white sheets and a seamless blend of modern minimalism and warm cosiness wrapped the space in understated luxury. It was a premium room, and it showed.

The bed? Seriously comfortable. I sat down "just for a second" and nearly didn't get back up.

Then came the bathroom — the next true wow moment. A deep soaking tub greeted me at the door, flanked by a separate shower and a private toilet area. But the real surprise was the toilet itself: a Western-style fixture with Japanese precision — heated seat, hands-free cleansing, all at the gentle press of a button. Completely effortless.

Beyond the bath, a spacious walk-in closet waited to unpack my travels. And then the crowning touch — a long, L-shaped balcony, entirely my own, overlooking the soft glow of Paro town below. No neighbours, no noise. Just the valley, the rooftops, and the quiet hum of Bhutan after dark.

Guests can choose from three room types: Deluxe Rooms, offering elegant comfort and wide panoramic views; Premium Rooms, with extra space and a more refined feel; and the DAWA Suite, a one-of-a-kind luxury retreat with stunning, uninterrupted views of Paro.

Food Experience

Exhaustion finally caught up with me, and I surrendered to the bed early. But even then, the hotel's thoughtfulness followed — a Caesar salad, my absolute favourite, arrived at my door like a quiet gift from a friend who already knew me.

The next morning, breakfast at Cypress Fusion Restaurant turned out to be more than just a meal. It was a whole moment. With seating for up to 120 guests across indoor and outdoor spaces, it's a wonderful fit for families, couples, and groups alike.

Bowls of fresh fruit shone in the morning light, a variety of dishes offered flavours I won't soon forget, and the coffee didn't just wake me up — it seemed to pour life back into my bones. I ended up staying at the table far longer than I'd planned, not so much eating as simply soaking it all in.

Just outside the dining hall, a separate stall caught my eye. There stood a young chef named Tshering Tashi — trained, skilful, and quietly passionate. His specialty? Dosa. People said his were the best, and after one bite, I understood why. Crisp, golden, spiced just right. Without a doubt, the best I've ever had.

D Bar

Located at the heart of the hotel, just to the right of the main foyer, D Bar strikes a confident balance between Bhutanese charm and modern elegance. With seating for up to 40 guests, it's an inviting spot for relaxed conversations, casual meet-ups, or celebratory toasts.

The bar offers a thoughtful selection of signature cocktails, curated spirits, and artisanal teas — a great stop at any time of day. As the light shifts, so does the mood, easing from a bright, laid-back lounge by day into a warm, intimate setting by evening, perfect for unwinding after a long one.

During happy hours, the energy picks up — specially crafted drinks and a lively yet relaxed buzz make it an ideal place to start or end your evening on a high note.

Sky Deck

The Sky Deck feels like a quiet conversation between the mountains and the clouds. This open-air vantage point is where the day naturally slows down. As the morning mist lifts off the valley floor, sweeping views of terraced hills, scattered farmhouses, and distant peaks come into focus — close enough, it seems, to reach out and touch.

It's also one of the most sought-after spots for photography, where every angle frames Paro differently — sometimes dramatic, sometimes gentle, always cinematic. More than just a viewpoint, it gives you the feeling of being suspended between earth and sky, as Paro unfolds in its most poetic form.

Amenities

What stayed with me most was how effortlessly the hotel kept reinventing itself. One moment I was quietly sipping tea in a calm, green-wrapped dining space; the next, I was in a chic rooftop lounge watching the city slowly glow to life. It didn't feel like a single hotel — it felt like a collection of experiences, each flowing into the next without missing a beat.

A true highlight of the resort, the infinity-edge pool is Bhutan's largest indoor heated pool, where you can swim while gazing out at reflections of the sky and surrounding hills. It's the kind of space where you don't just relax — you pause, breathe it all in, and linger far longer than you planned.

The Chelela Spa is a peaceful hideaway inspired by Bhutan's natural elements — water, wind, and earth. Tucked into the quietest corner of the property, it features three cosy treatment rooms blending traditional Himalayan healing with modern wellness. Whether it's a deep-tissue massage or a soothing herbal therapy, it's a space to truly reset.

The Mountain Pulse gym is fully equipped with both cardio and strength training facilities. What sets it apart, though, are the sweeping mountain views that surround you on all sides — making every workout feel less like effort and more like an experience in itself.

The Archery Deck is an open-air bonfire space inspired by Bhutan's deep love for archery and community. With capacity for up to 200 guests, it offers mountain views, live storytelling, and cultural experiences — perfect for evening gatherings, private events, or simply unwinding under the stars.

My Reflection

This isn't the kind of hotel you simply stay in — it becomes part of the experience itself. Whether you're here to unwind or explore, it has a way of gently slowing everything down, in the best possible sense. Time stretches here. You suddenly realise you haven't reached for your phone in hours.

The service was attentive without ever feeling intrusive, and the amenities held their own against international luxury standards. Rooms were well-appointed, balancing comfort with functionality in equal measure.

And this place isn't just about being fancy — though it absolutely is.

It lingers long after you leave. By the time I checked out, it wasn't the architecture or the amenities that stayed with me. It was the stillness. The quiet sense that, for a brief time, everything had slowed to a more human pace.
