Royal Visit Brings Radiance to the East
His Majesty The King and Her Majesty The Gyaltsuen, with Their Royal Highnesses, grace Yonphula Shedra, Sherubtse College, and the second Rhododendron Festival at Sheytemi — bringing the full warmth of the Royal Family to Bhutan's eastern heartland.
When the Royal Family travels to the east, it is never merely a journey across geography. It is an affirmation of the region's centrality to the national soul and a celebration of the living bond between the Dragon Throne and the people of the Sharchog Khorlo Tshengye (the Land of the Radiant Sun). This hallowed title honors the eight districts of Eastern Bhutan, the first corner of the kingdom to be touched by the morning light and a historic gateway of the nation’s spiritual heritage.
Over a two-day visit beginning 2 April 2026, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar, Her Majesty Queen Jetsun Pema, and Their Royal Highnesses Gyalsey Jigme Namgyel Wangchuck, Gyalsey Ugyen Wangchuck, and Gyalsem Sonam Yangden Wangchuck, graced eastern Bhutan with a Royal Visit. Their Majesties were accompanied by His Royal Highness Gyaltshab Jigme Dorji Wangchuck and Ashi Yeatso Lhamo.
Spiritual Foundations at Yonphula
The Royal Visit commenced at the sacred heights of Yonphula. The Royal Family offered prayers at the Yonphula Lhakhang, an ancient bastion of devotion in Trashigang.
A significant highlight of the visit was the inspection of the new Yonphula Shedra — an institute of higher Buddhist learning. As a Royal Project, the Shedra stands as a testament to His Majesty’s vision for the sustained flourish of Buddhist scholarship in the east.
This "monastery of the intellect" provides a sanctuary where monks can engage in rigorous study of philosophy and ritual, ensuring the light of the Dharma continues to shine from these ridgelines. The Royal patronage underscores a deep commitment to the spiritual stewardship of the kingdom’s Himalayan heritage.
Igniting Minds at Sherubtse
Moving from the spiritual to the academic, His Majesty The King granted a Royal Audience to the faculty and students of Sherubtse College in Kanglung. As the "Peak of Learning" and Bhutan’s oldest premier institute, Sherubtse holds a hallowed place in the nation’s history.
His Majesty’s interaction with the scholars was a moment of profound inspiration. For the students and faculty in Kanglung, the Audience served as a powerful reminder that their intellectual pursuits are vital to the nation's future.
Following the college visit, His Majesty also granted Audiences to district officials from Trashigang and Trashiyangtse, acknowledging their dedicated service as administrative stewards of the east.
A Celebration of Nature: The Rhododendron Festival
On 3 April, the atmosphere turned festive as the Royal Family graced the opening of the second Rhododendron Festival at Sheytemi in Merak, Trashigang.
The highland meadows, situated at 2,900 metres, were transformed into a vibrant tapestry of crimson, pink, and white. Over 8,000 people gathered to witness the opening of the week-long festival (3–9 April). With Bhutan home to 46 species of rhododendrons—41 of which are found in the Merak-Sakteng region—the festival highlights the extraordinary biodiversity of the Sakteng Wildlife Sanctuary.
The Heart of the Brokpa Culture
The festival was a tribute to the resilient Brokpa community. Their Majesties and Their Royal Highnesses observed traditional dances, songs, and games that define the highland way of life. Local artisanal products, from famed yak-hair hats to unique dairy delicacies, were on proud display.
The Royal Presence at Sheytemi reflects the core values of Gross National Happiness, where environmental conservation and cultural preservation are intertwined. By amplifying local traditions and ecology, the festival—organised by the Trashigang Dzongkhag and the Department of Tourism—sets a gold standard for community-led, sustainable tourism.
The King Among His People
Royal Visits to the eastern districts remain the most cherished thread in the fabric of Bhutanese statecraft. His Majesty’s presence in the classrooms of Sherubtse, the prayer halls of Yonphula, and the windswept meadows of Merak reaffirms that every citizen, no matter how distant from the capital, is seen and valued.
