A line of prayer across Gelephu

Project 108 brings together the raising and consecration of 108 Jangchub Chortens, or Stupas of Enlightenment. Set 108 metres apart along an approximately 12-kilometre corridor beside the Mau Chhu, the chortens mark a shared act of faith and community.

The main ceremonies are scheduled for 1 November, with prayers, circumambulation and further observances continuing through 4 November. Watch from wherever you are, and use the programme below to follow each day.

Prayers for the day

Throughout the day, many in Bhutan will recite the six-syllable mantra, Om Mani Padme Hum, and other prayers, and you are welcome to join them.
Om Mani Padme Hum

Om Mani Padme Hum is the mantra of Chenrezig, the embodiment of compassion. Its six syllables are said to purify six emotions that bring suffering into the world—desire, anger, ignorance, pride, jealousy and greed—so that an open and compassionate heart can shine through.

In Bhutan it is everywhere: murmured by elders turning prayer wheels, carved into stones along the paths, carried on the wind by prayer flags. To recite it, one needs only the wish that all beings be free.
