About Dechenphu Tshechu 2026
Dechenphu Tshechu is a religious festival in Thimphu, listed on the tshechu.com 2026 festival calendar.
The programme centres on sacred mask dances (cham) in colourful costumes, and many local attendees dress in their finest gho or kira. Festival dates follow the Bhutanese lunar calendar, so they shift from year to year.
A detailed daily programme and performance times are not yet listed here. We will update this page when organisers release confirmed information.
What to expect
- Mask dances and rituals: Performances carry religious meaning as well as visual drama. Give participants room and follow any directions from festival staff.
- A lively local gathering: Expect families and friends to spend time together at the festival, often dressed for the occasion.
- Lunar calendar dates: Tshechu dates follow the Bhutanese lunar calendar. Check them again closer to your trip.
Plan your visit
- Check the dates before booking. The dates come from the tshechu.com calendar, and lunar dates can change.
- Dress respectfully. Visitors do not need to wear a gho or kira, but modest clothing is appropriate at a religious festival.
- Ask before photographing people closely. Follow signs and local guidance on photography during ceremonies.
- Allow time in the area. A less rushed visit lets you enjoy the festival and the surrounding valley.
