Prime Minister Modi Arrives in Bhutan for a Two-Day State Visit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi begins a two-day state visit to Bhutan to join the 70th Birth Anniversary celebrations of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, inaugurate the Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project, and strengthen India–Bhutan ties.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has arrived in Bhutan for a two-day state visit to the Kingdom, joining the nation in celebrating the 70th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. Upon arrival at Paro International Airport, Prime Minister Modi was warmly received by Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay, along with senior officials and representatives of the Royal Government of Bhutan.

The visit underscores the enduring friendship between India and Bhutan, built upon mutual trust, respect, and a shared vision for prosperity and peace.
Strengthening Ties with the Bhutanese Leadership
During his stay in Thimphu, Prime Minister Modi will meet His Majesty The King, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, His Majesty The Fourth King, and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. The leaders are expected to hold discussions aimed at further deepening bilateral cooperation and exploring new avenues of collaboration.
Before his departure, Prime Minister Modi shared, “I am confident that my visit will further deepen our bonds of friendship and strengthen our efforts towards shared progress and prosperity.”
He added, “It would be my honour to join the people of Bhutan as they mark the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth King.”
Inauguration of Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project
A key highlight of the visit is the inauguration of the Punatsangchhu-II Hydropower Project, a major milestone in Bhutan–India energy cooperation. The project symbolises the enduring partnership between the two countries, contributing to Bhutan’s clean energy ambitions and regional sustainability goals.
“Our partnership is a key pillar of our Neighbourhood First Policy and a model for exemplary friendly relations between neighbouring countries,” Prime Minister Modi remarked.
Participation in the Global Peace Prayer Festival
Prime Minister Modi will also participate in the Global Peace Prayer Festival, organised by the Royal Government of Bhutan. The event reflects Bhutan’s spiritual heritage and global message of harmony, compassion, and mindfulness.
In a post on X, he wrote, “Leaving for Bhutan, where I will attend various programmes. This visit comes at a time when Bhutan is marking the 70th birthday of His Majesty the Fourth King. I will be holding talks with His Majesty the King of Bhutan, His Majesty the Fourth King and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay.”
