Black Mountain Festival Returns to Trongsa This October
Trongsa’s Black Mountain Festival returns on 3 and 4 October 2026, following a five-day journey through all five gewogs celebrating heritage, Monpa culture, creativity and community.
Trongsa will host the Black Mountain Festival on 3 and 4 October 2026, bringing together communities from across the central Bhutanese district for two days focused on culture, creativity, heritage and local participation.
This year’s festival carries the theme, “Trongsa Through Time: Celebrating Heritage, Creativity, and Community.”
The main programme at Yid-Zhin Throm will be preceded by a five-day Regional Highway Build-Up from 28 September to 2 October. The build-up will travel through all five gewogs, or subdistricts, of Trongsa before culminating in the two-day festival.
The expanded format places the district’s communities at the centre of the event, while offering visitors an opportunity to learn more about Trongsa’s history, cultural traditions and contemporary local life.
A festival that begins across the district
Rather than concentrating all activities in Trongsa town, the 2026 programme begins with a journey through the district.
The Regional Highway Build-Up will pass through Trongsa’s five gewogs of Drakteng, Korphu, Langthel, Tangsibje and Nubi. These are the five administrative gewogs listed by Trongsa Dzongkhag Administration.
Running from 28 September to 2 October, the build-up is intended to connect communities across the district before participants gather at Yid-Zhin Throm for the main festival.
The approach also reflects the festival’s emphasis on community participation. Instead of presenting Trongsa through a single location, it creates space for different parts of the district to contribute to the wider celebration.
Trongsa through time
The festival theme draws directly from Trongsa’s importance in Bhutanese history.
Located in central Bhutan, Trongsa played a major political and strategic role before the establishment of Bhutan’s hereditary monarchy in 1907. Trongsa Dzong was historically the seat of power over much of central and eastern Bhutan and was closely associated with the Wangchuck family before the dynasty became Bhutan’s royal house.
The First King of Bhutan, Ugyen Wangchuck, served as Trongsa Penlop before becoming the country’s first hereditary monarch. The association between Trongsa and the monarchy has remained an important part of the district’s identity.
The district administration describes Trongsa as the ancestral home of Bhutan’s royal family, while the Royal Heritage Museum at Ta Dzong preserves objects and stories connected with the Wangchuck dynasty and the earlier history of the region.
For international visitors unfamiliar with Bhutan, the festival therefore offers more than a cultural programme. It is also an introduction to a place that occupies an important position in the country’s political and royal history.
Revitalisation of the Royal Heritage Museum
The Royal Heritage Museum is also part of a wider effort to strengthen Bhutan’s museum infrastructure. The Department of Culture and Dzongkha Development launched the Building Fund for the Museums of Bhutan global fundraising campaign. The initiative seeks to upgrade museum facilities and develop new spaces at heritage sites, including the Royal Heritage Museum in Trongsa, to support cultural programmes, public events and greater community engagement.

Bringing Monpa culture into the wider story
The Black Mountain Festival has also previously highlighted the culture of the Monpa communities associated with the Black Mountain region.
When the festival was organised in Trongsa in 2022, Bhutan Broadcasting Service reported that its programme included local food, arts and crafts, natural heritage and Monpa culture.
The 2026 festival announcement again places Monpa culture among the experiences visitors can encounter.
Including these traditions within the wider festival gives the event a broader purpose. It creates an opportunity for local communities to present cultural knowledge and practices in their own district while helping visitors understand that Bhutan’s cultural identity includes distinct regional communities and traditions.
Creativity, competition and community
The two main festival days on 3 and 4 October are expected to combine culture, competition, creativity and community activities at Yid-Zhin Throm.
Community focus is consistent with earlier editions of the Black Mountain Festival. In 2022, the event incorporated local products, cuisine, arts, crafts and biodiversity alongside cultural activities.
For Trongsa, events of this kind can also provide a platform for local producers, craftspeople, performers and communities to introduce their work to audiences from elsewhere in Bhutan and abroad.
Another reason to experience central Bhutan
Many international travellers journey through Bhutan traditionally focus on western destinations such as Paro, Thimphu and Punakha. The Black Mountain Festival offers a reason to spend more time in the centre of the country and engage with Trongsa beyond its best-known monuments.
The Department of Tourism has itself highlighted regional festivals as one way of encouraging visitors to explore areas beyond Bhutan’s three most frequently visited western valleys.
For travellers in Trongsa this autumn, the festival provides a concentrated introduction to the district’s royal history, community traditions and contemporary creativity.
