First Multidisciplinary Breast Clinic Opens in Thimphu

Bhutan has opened its first multidisciplinary breast clinic in Thimphu, inaugurated by Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck. A landmark step in women’s healthcare, it offers cutting-edge screening, diagnosis, and treatment under one roof.

First Multidisciplinary Breast Clinic Opens in Thimphu

On 13 September, Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck inaugurated Bhutan’s first multidisciplinary breast clinic at the Gyaltsuen Jetsun Pema Wangchuck Mother and Child Hospital in Thimphu. The opening marked a defining moment in the nation’s healthcare journey, placing women’s health at the centre of national priorities.

Transforming Breast Cancer Care

The new clinic is set to transform how breast cancer is detected and treated in Bhutan. For the first time, patients can access the full spectrum of care—screening, diagnosis, surgery, and oncology—under one roof. Its comprehensive approach is designed to improve early detection, treatment outcomes, and overall patient experience.

Her Majesty Gyalyum Sangay Choden Wangchuck, the Royal Patron of the Gyalyum Charitable Trust, led the inauguration in the presence of Her Royal Highness Princess Eeuphelma Choden Wangchuck, Health Minister Lyonpo Tandin Wangchuk, and senior dignitaries. The establishment of the centre reflects a close partnership between the Ministry of Health, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck National Referral Hospital, National Medical Services, and the Gyalyum Charitable Trust.

Expertise from Home and Abroad

The clinic brings together a multidisciplinary team of radiologists, surgeons, pathologists, and oncologists. Many of these specialists have received advanced training at the Queen Sirikit Centre for Breast Cancer (QSCBC) in Bangkok, ensuring international standards of expertise are available to Bhutanese patients.

Equipped with some of the most advanced tools in the region, the clinic houses a Tomosynthesis 3D Mammography Machine from the United States, a Faxitron HD Specimen Radiography Unit, and a precision Near-Infrared Camera for guided surgeries. These technologies are expected to significantly enhance the accuracy of diagnosis and treatment planning.

The QSCBC has played a vital role in the clinic’s readiness, providing essential equipment, technical guidance, and ongoing mentorship. The Gyalyum Charitable Trust spearheaded coordination and resource mobilisation, ensuring the project was realised as a sustainable, long-term initiative.

A Commitment to Women’s Health

Beyond being a medical milestone, the establishment of this clinic is a clear statement of Bhutan’s commitment to equitable and quality healthcare. By embedding the centre within existing hospital infrastructure, the Ministry of Health has ensured its sustainability while reaffirming the nation’s dedication to improving women’s health for generations to come.
