Gelephu International Airport Welcomes Its First International Flight
Bhutan celebrates the inaugural Gelephu–Kolkata flight as Gelephu International Airport begins international operations, strengthening regional connectivity and supporting the vision of Gelephu Mindfulness City.
A new chapter in Bhutan’s aviation history unfolded on 8 December 2025 as the Gelephu International Airport saw its very first international flight take off on the Gelephu–Kolkata–Gelephu route. Operated by Drukair, this inaugural connection officially positions Gelephu as the country’s newest international aviation gateway, strengthening the southern border’s role as a rising regional hub.

A Boost for Regional Connectivity
The introduction of international operations from Gelephu is expected to deepen Bhutan’s links with its neighbours and open fresh pathways for travellers, investors, and businesses. Enhanced connections are set to support tourism, logistics, trade, and services, reflecting the broader vision behind the fast-evolving Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC).
This development follows the airport’s receipt of its Aerodrome Certificate from the Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority in September 2023, confirming its compliance with international safety and operational standards for commercial aviation.
Scheduled Flights Begin 12 December
Drukair will operate two weekly commercial flights on Mondays and Fridays.
Flight Schedule:
• KB210 – GLU → CCU | Dep 12:10 | Arr 13:10
• KB211 – CCU → GLU | Dep 13:50 | Arr 15:20
These regular services are set to provide smoother access between Bhutan and one of India’s major regional gateways.

The Inaugural Flight
During the maiden flight, GMC Governor Dasho Dr Lotay Tshering underscored the wider significance of this launch for the city’s long-term aspirations.
“With the launch of international flights, Gelephu will connect Bhutan more seamlessly with our neighbours and partners. This is a symbol of our readiness to engage the region through mindful, sustainable, and future-focused development,” he said.
Echoing this sentiment, Drukair CEO Tandi Wangchuk emphasised the transformative potential of the new route. “The launch of international flights from Gelephu is more than a route expansion, it is the opening of Bhutan’s future gateway. With direct links to Kolkata, Gelephu will accelerate its transformation into a global destination for mindful living, innovation, and sustainable development.”

Gelephu Mindfulness City: Bhutan’s Vision for the Future
Nestled along Bhutan’s southern border, the Gelephu Mindfulness City continues to take shape under an innovative governance framework and a clear commitment to holistic growth. Its development spans eight priority sectors—spirituality; health & wellness; education & knowledge; agri-tech & forestry; green energy & technologies; finance & digital assets; aviation & logistics; and tourism.
The airport’s first international departure marks not just an operational achievement, but a powerful signal of what lies ahead for the city and the nation.
This historic launch comes on the heels of global recognition: Gelephu International Airport was recently named Future Project of the Year at the World Architecture Festival 2025, a prestigious honour celebrating visionary design and sustainable planning. The award highlighted the airport’s role as a model for infrastructure aligned with Bhutan’s mindful development ethos.
