RENEW Youth Programme Inspires Compassion, Confidence and Leadership in Gelephu

As Gelephu moves steadily toward its transformative vision of becoming Bhutan’s Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC)—a city designed to nurture well-being, sustainability, and human flourishing—the role of youth development is becoming increasingly central. In this inspiring context, Summer Youth Engagement Programme was organised by RENEW Community Service Centre has emerged as a meaningful step toward shaping confident, compassionate, and socially responsible young citizens.

Held at the RENEW Community Service Centre in Gelephu, the programme brought together students from Classes VII to XII in an enriching series of interactive learning experiences focused on teamwork, gender awareness, anti-bullying, mental well-being, creativity, and leadership. Designed to go beyond classroom instruction, the initiative embraced experiential learning methods that allowed students to actively participate, reflect, and grow.

A Vibrant Platform for Youth Engagement

The programme was carefully designed to respond to the evolving needs and interests of young people. Drawing from participants’ inputs during registration, organisers created activities that were engaging, relevant, and youth-centred. This approach ensured that students were not just passive learners, but active contributors to their own development journey. From the very beginning, the atmosphere was energetic and inclusive, setting the tone for open dialogue, collaboration, and mutual respect. The programme successfully created a safe and supportive space where young participants could express themselves freely and confidently.

Encouraging Inclusion, Understanding and Respect

One of the most impactful aspects of the programme was its focus on inclusion and social awareness. Through interactive activities such as “Agree and Disagree,” “Human Bingo,” and “Superhero Me,” students explored themes of identity, diversity, and respect in an engaging and meaningful way.

These sessions encouraged participants to appreciate differences while recognising shared human values. The interactive format helped build empathy, strengthen communication skills, and foster a deeper understanding of inclusion—qualities essential for thriving in an increasingly interconnected world. The experience also empowered students to reflect on social norms and develop a more thoughtful approach to relationships and community life.

Strengthening Confidence Against Bullying

A key highlight of the programme was its strong focus on anti-bullying awareness and prevention. Students learned about different forms of bullying and explored its emotional and social impacts through creative role plays, group discussions, and the engaging “Human Web” activity.

These activities helped participants understand the importance of kindness, responsibility, and collective well-being. By recognising how individual actions influence the wider community, students developed a strong sense of accountability and empathy.

The programme’s approach to bullying prevention was both practical and empowering, equipping young people with the confidence to stand up for themselves and support others positively.

Promoting Emotional Well-being and Inner Strength

Mental well-being formed a core pillar of the programme. Guided by a clinical counsellor, students explored the connection between physical, emotional, and mental health through interactive tools such as the Wellness Wheel and Blindfold Team Challenge.

These sessions helped participants understand the importance of self-awareness, emotional balance, and healthy coping strategies. The open and supportive discussions encouraged students to view mental health as an essential part of overall well-being.

By normalising conversations around emotions and resilience, the programme contributed to building a generation of young people who are more self-aware, confident, and emotionally strong.

Inspiring Creativity, Leadership and Team Spirit

The final day of the programme celebrated creativity and leadership through dynamic activities including storytelling, photography challenges, gallery walks, and talent showcases. These activities allowed students to express themselves in diverse and imaginative ways.

Participants demonstrated remarkable teamwork, communication, and problem-solving skills as they collaborated on creative missions. The experience highlighted that leadership is not only about authority, but also about empathy, cooperation, and the ability to inspire others. The lively atmosphere reflected the success of the programme in unlocking hidden talents and encouraging students to step forward with confidence.

A Step Toward Gelephu’s Mindful Future

The programme strongly aligns with the broader vision of Gelephu Mindfulness City, which emphasises the integration of economic progress with emotional well-being and ethical development. Initiatives like this demonstrate how youth engagement can play a powerful role in shaping a more compassionate and thoughtful society. By focusing on values such as kindness, respect, resilience, and cooperation, the programme contributed meaningfully to nurturing the kind of citizens envisioned for GMC’s future.

The impact of the programme lies in the experiences it created and the values it reinforced. It offered students a rare opportunity to learn through interaction, reflection, and creativity—helping them grow not only academically, but personally and socially. As Bhutan continues to invest in holistic education and youth empowerment, programmes like this stand as strong examples of how community-driven initiatives can inspire positive change. They remind us that the foundation of a mindful city begins with mindful citizens—young individuals who are confident, compassionate, and ready to contribute meaningfully to society.
