Passion and Purpose: Hidden Gems and Spiritual Wonders in Bhutan

Bhutan, a land of breathtaking landscapes and rich traditions, is best experienced through the eyes of those who know it intimately. In this interview, Dorji Wangchuk, a seasoned tour guide, shares his journey of guiding travellers through Bhutan’s sacred valleys, hidden monasteries, and vibrant cultural heritage.

Passion and Purpose: Hidden Gems and Spiritual Wonders in Bhutan

Please share a little bit about yourself and where you grew up.

My name is Dorji Wangchuk, and I grew up in the serene village of Drukgyel in Paro, located in the upper valley at an elevation of 2,300 metres above sea level. I was raised in a time before the arrival of the internet and television in Bhutan, but life was rich in ways that truly mattered—deep community bonds, vibrant social interactions, and a strong connection to our traditions. Life moved at a gentler pace, allowing for a sense of tranquillity and less hecticness.

What inspired you to become a tour guide?

I’ve been a tour guide in Bhutan for almost a decade now. My journey into guiding was inspired by a deep passion for meaningful human connections and the desire to share Bhutan’s beauty and heritage with the world. Being a guide allows me to bridge cultures, create unforgettable experiences, and foster a deeper understanding of my country. It is a perfect blend of adventure and the privilege of being an ambassador for Bhutan.

What are some of your favourite parts about guiding?

One of the most rewarding aspects of guiding is immersing in Bhutan’s breathtaking scenery, embarking on incredible adventures, and forging meaningful friendships along the way. Each journey becomes an unforgettable experience, not just for the travellers but for me as well.

What’s your favourite place in Bhutan to take visitors, and why?

One of my favourite places to take visitors is Singye Dzong, often called the “Tiger’s Nest of Eastern Bhutan.” Located in the remote and sacred region of Lhuentse at an altitude of 4,482 metres, it is a place of profound spiritual energy. Every traveller who makes the journey feels an indescribable sense of peace, positive energy and connection upon reaching this untouched, sacred site.

What do you enjoy doing when you’re not working as a guide?

During the off-peak seasons, I love immersing myself in photography. Capturing Bhutan’s landscapes, culture, and people through my lens allows me to preserve moments of beauty and share the essence of my homeland with the world.

What are some everyday Bhutanese customs that tourists should know to be respectful?

To ensure a respectful and meaningful visit to Bhutan, travellers should walk clockwise around religious monuments and remove their footwear, hats, and sunglasses before entering shrine rooms. These simple acts reflect mindfulness and respect for Bhutanese culture and spiritual traditions.

If you could only eat one Bhutanese dish for the rest of your life, what would it be?

If I could only eat one Bhutanese dish for the rest of my life, without a doubt, it would be Jasha Maru—a flavourful minced chicken dish that is both comforting and deeply rooted in Bhutanese cuisine.

If you could share one Bhutanese tradition with the world, what would it be and why?

I would share Driglam Namzha, a 17th-century tradition of etiquette that instils discipline, kindness, and generosity in every Bhutanese. It shapes a society built on respect, harmony, and a deep sense of community—values that shaped us into well-behaved, sympathetic and generous individuals.

What’s one piece of advice you would give to someone visiting Bhutan for the first time?

For an enriching experience, book your journey with a reputable tour operator like Druk Asia, pack appropriately for Bhutan’s varying altitudes, and most importantly, embrace the local customs with an open heart. The magic of Bhutan lies in its culture, and respecting it allows for a truly immersive and rewarding adventure.

If you weren’t a tour guide, what other job would you love to do?

If I weren’t guiding to earn my bread and butter, I would pursue photography full-time. Capturing the soul of Bhutan through images and sharing its untouched beauty with the world is something I deeply cherish.
