Drukair Expands Singapore–Paro Route to Meet Rising Travel Demand

Bhutan’s national airline, Drukair, has increased its flights between Singapore and Paro, strengthening connectivity between Southeast Asia and the Himalayan kingdom.

The move is designed to accommodate a sustained growth in passenger demand, reflecting a steady recovery in international travel to Bhutan. Singapore remains a key aviation hub, with Singapore Changi Airport serving as a major transit point for travellers from Australia, Indonesia, and across Southeast Asia.

The inaugural flight on 8th April was commemorated with a small yet meaningful celebration in collaboration with Changi Airport Group and Druk Asia, the GSA for Drukair in Singapore.

To celebrate the occasion, a mini welcome event was organised at the arrival gate at Singapore Changi Airport. Passengers arriving on the flight were warmly received and presented with small commemorative gifts, including specially curated luggage tags, as a token of appreciation.

Flight Schedule and Frequency Increase

Since April 2026, Drukair has increased its Paro–Guwahati–Singapore route from twice weekly to a third weekly frequency, improving onward connections to global hubs.

Strategic Connectivity Beyond Tourism

While tourism remains a central driver, the route expansion is also positioned within a broader regional strategy. The increased connectivity is aligned with Bhutan’s long-term development initiatives, including the Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a planned economic hub in southern Bhutan.

Improved air access via Singapore could support future investment flows, business travel, and regional partnerships linked to the GMC project, although specific aviation links to Gelephu are still in early-stage development.

The expansion also reflects wider regional dynamics, including India’s Act East Policy, which aims to strengthen economic and connectivity ties across South and Southeast Asia. Bhutan’s aviation links are increasingly part of this broader network.

Access Constraints and Managed Growth

All international flights to Bhutan operate through Paro International Airport, one of the world’s most challenging airports due to its mountainous terrain and strict operating conditions.

As a result, increases in flight frequency are typically incremental and carefully regulated. This approach supports Bhutan’s development philosophy based on Gross National Happiness, which prioritises sustainability and controlled tourism growth.

Supporting Bhutan’s Sustainable Tourism Model

Bhutan continues to promote a high-value, low-impact tourism model. Improved flight availability helps:

  • Ease peak-season congestion
  • Provide more predictable travel planning
  • Enhance overall visitor experience

Since reopening to international tourism in September 2022, Bhutan has seen a gradual recovery in visitor numbers. While Singapore is not among the largest direct source markets, it plays a critical role as a regional gateway.

A key factor is the global reputation of Singapore Changi Airport, consistently ranked among the world’s best airports for its efficiency, connectivity, and passenger experience. Travellers benefit from seamless transfers, extensive flight networks linking Europe, Australia, and Asia, as well as amenities such as streamlined immigration processes, high-quality lounges, and leisure facilities.

These factors make Changi a preferred transit hub for long-haul travellers heading to Bhutan, where direct access remains limited.

Outlook

Drukair’s expansion reflects a measured response to growing demand while remaining aligned with Bhutan’s cautious approach to tourism and development.

As regional connectivity improves, routes such as Singapore–Paro are expected to play an increasingly important role—not only in tourism—but in supporting Bhutan’s evolving economic landscape, including projects like Gelephu Mindfulness City.
