In a moving and deeply personal address at Chulalongkorn University, His Majesty King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck reflected on his lifelong connection with Thailand, sharing memories that ranged from student life abroad to enduring lessons on leadership, compassion, and strength.

Speaking on 22nd December 2025 after receiving an honorary Doctor of Philosophy degree in International Development Studies, His Majesty spoke candidly about the quiet loneliness of studying overseas and the unexpected comfort he found in Thai cuisine during those formative years.

Finding Home Far from Home

“When I was a young student, first in America and then in England, I was like many students far from home – often homesick,” His Majesty recalled. “There were no Bhutanese restaurants. Not in Boston, not in London, not anywhere. And then I discovered Thai food. The spice, the rice, the warmth. It was not quite Bhutan, but it was close. It was my comfort food.”

Thai restaurants, he shared, became emotional anchors during that period of his life. “I cannot tell you how many green curries saved me during those years,” he added, drawing warm smiles from the audience.

The Paradox That Defines Thailand

Beyond nostalgia, His Majesty reflected on a defining insight into Thailand’s national character, recounting a conversation that left a lasting impression on him. “She said, ‘But our national sport is Muay Thai.’ Kickboxing. The room went quiet,” the King recalled.

“She smiled and asked, ‘What does this mean?’ Then she answered her own question. It means that we are compassionate, but we are not weak. We are peaceful, but we are not passive.” Reflecting on that moment, His Majesty said, “I’ve never forgotten those words. That beautiful paradox – Buddhist compassion and warrior spirit – defines Thailand. And it is a combination that will serve this nation well for centuries to come.”

Tribute to Thailand’s Royal Family

The Bhutanese King also paid heartfelt tribute to Thailand’s Royal Family, acknowledging the responsibility borne by His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua as he continues the legacy of one of the world’s most revered monarchs.

“His Majesty carries a weight that few can understand – to follow one of the most loved monarchies in the world whilst charting his own path of service,” he said. “I’ve watched His Majesty closely: the dignity with which he serves, his dedication to education, healthcare and development, his tireless work to improve the lives of ordinary citizens.”

Speaking of Queen Suthida, His Majesty drew parallels with values passed down to him by his own father, emphasising the quiet strength behind national service. “I see that in Her Majesty the Queen of Thailand, standing firmly beside His Majesty, serving him and through him her nation and her people,” he said.

His address concluded with an expression of deep gratitude for the Thai royal couple’s historic state visit to Bhutan earlier this year, their first overseas visit since King Rama X’s accession, underscoring the enduring friendship and shared values between the two kingdoms.
