Bhutan Goes Cashless: Bhutan Launches World’s First National Tourism Crypto Payment System

Bhutan partners with Binance Pay and DK Bank to launch the world’s first national-level crypto tourism payment system. From flights and visas to hotel stays and local shopping, travellers can now explore Bhutan using digital currencies for a seamless, cashless journey.

Bhutan Goes Cashless: Bhutan Launches World’s First National Tourism Crypto Payment System

The Kingdom of Bhutan, famed for its Gross National Happiness philosophy, has teamed up with Binance Pay and DK Bank to roll out the world’s first national-level crypto tourism payment system. This pioneering move lets travellers with Binance accounts use digital currencies to pay for nearly every aspect of their Bhutan journey – from airfares and visas to accommodation, heritage site entry, tour guides, and even local fruit at roadside stalls.

With over 100 local merchants already integrated by DK Bank and Binance Pay, visitors can now enjoy an entirely cashless and card-free experience in one of the most enchanting destinations on Earth.

A Seamless Travel Experience with One Wallet

From the moment you arrive in Bhutan to the time you browse for handmade goods in a quiet village shop, your entire trip can now be powered by crypto. The Binance app enables real-time transactions using either dynamic or static QR codes, offering a secure and smooth experience.

The system supports over 100 cryptocurrencies such as BNB, BTC, and USDC. All payments are instantly settled in Bhutanese currency via DK Bank, eliminating traditional hurdles like currency conversion issues, steep transaction fees, and card acceptance barriers.

Given Binance Pay’s global reach—supporting more than 300 cryptocurrencies and serving millions of users in over 100 countries—it’s well positioned to power an initiative of this scale efficiently and securely, all without gas fees.

Empowering Local Communities Through Technology

Beyond modernising payments, this partnership brings genuine economic opportunity to Bhutanese communities. Even small-scale artisans and vendors in remote areas, who previously lacked access to card terminals, can now accept crypto with just a smartphone and a QR code.

As Damcho Rinzin, Director of Bhutan’s Department of Tourism, aptly put it, This is more than a payment solution – it’s a commitment to innovation, inclusion, and convenience. The initiative supports Bhutan’s wider goals of sustainability, equitable development, and preserving cultural heritage by ensuring even the most rural businesses can connect with international travellers.

A Forward-Looking Partnership

Binance sees this collaboration as part of a broader vision to link people, economies, and cultures through innovation. We are excited to partner with Bhutan as we are not only advancing the use of cryptocurrencies in travel, but also setting a precedent for how technology can bridge cultures and economies,” said Richard Teng, CEO of Binance. “This initiative exemplifies our commitment to innovation and our belief in a future where digital finance empowers global connectivity and enriches travel experiences.

Bhutan is now home to the world’s first national-scale, fully integrated crypto tourism payment system. With real-time confirmations, minimal fees, and a licensed local bank handling settlements, the framework sets a powerful precedent for what’s possible when innovation and public infrastructure come together.

DK Bank: Enabling Financial Inclusion

At the heart of this initiative is DK Bank—Bhutan’s first fully digital bank, licensed by the Royal Monetary Authority. Its mission is to provide accessible financial services to every corner of Bhutanese society, particularly those previously underserved by the traditional banking model. Through this partnership with Binance, DK Bank plays a key role in bringing inclusive fintech to the country’s vital tourism industry.

In Bhutan, crypto is set to be transforming the travel experience. This bold initiative demonstrates how digital finance can create inclusive economic ecosystems, drive tourism growth, and blend cultural preservation with forward-thinking tech. From arrival to departure, travellers in Bhutan can now explore the country effortlessly, with just one wallet powering the journey.
