Bhutan’s First Indoor Golf Bar: Inside The 19th Hole

Bhutan’s recreational scene has just gained an exciting new addition with the opening of The 19th Hole, the country’s first indoor golf simulator bar. Designed as a relaxed social hub rather than just a sports facility, The 19th Hole blends cutting-edge golf simulator technology with food and beverages, karaoke, and a welcoming space to unwind with friends and family.

From experienced players looking to sharpen their swing to first-timers eager to try the sport, the venue offers an approachable way to learn and enjoy golf. With its mix of sport, entertainment, and social atmosphere, The 19th Hole aims to become a place where people can chill, pick up a new skill, and spend an evening connecting over games, music, and good company.

Daily Bhutan interviewed the founders, Sonam Gagyel Lekphell & Sonam Wangyal Lekphell to find out more about the mission and vision behind The 19th Hole.

1. What made you start The 19th Hole?

The idea for The 19th Hole came from a passion for golf and the desire to introduce something new and exciting to Bhutan’s recreational scene. Golf is a beautiful sport, but access to golf courses can sometimes be limited for beginners or young people who want to try the game.

We wanted to create a space where anyone — whether they are experienced golfers or complete beginners — can experience golf in a fun and relaxed environment. The 19th Hole was designed to be more than just a simulator; it’s a social space where people can play, learn, relax with friends, and enjoy the game together.

2. Was it difficult setting up? What obstacles did you face?

Setting up The 19th Hole definitely came with its challenges. Since it is the first golf simulator facility in Bhutan, there was a lot of research and planning involved. We had to source specialized equipment, learn how to operate and maintain the technology, and design the space so it would feel both comfortable and exciting for guests.

It took several months of preparation, from planning the concept to setting up the simulators and testing everything. Like any new venture, there were logistical challenges, but we saw them as part of the learning process. In the end, it was very rewarding to see the idea come to life.

3. How does The 19th Hole help youth or contribute to society?

One of our biggest goals with The 19th Hole is to introduce golf to young people in Bhutan. Golf teaches discipline, patience, focus, and sportsmanship — qualities that are valuable beyond the sport itself.

We have already started golf coaching sessions for kids, where young players can learn the basics in a fun and supportive environment. By making golf more accessible through simulator technology, we hope to inspire more young people to take up the sport.

Beyond sports, The 19th Hole also provides a safe and positive social space where people can gather, relax, and connect through games and activities.

4. What is your hope or goal for The 19th Hole?

Our hope is for The 19th Hole to become a unique recreational hub in Bhutan, where people of all ages can enjoy golf and spend quality time with friends and family.

In the long term, we would love to see more young Bhutanese develop an interest in golf and possibly even pursue the sport at higher levels. If The 19th Hole can play a small role in growing the golf culture in Bhutan and encouraging healthy recreation, then we would consider it a success.

5. Why the name “The 19th Hole”?

In golf, the term “19th hole” is traditionally used to describe the place golfers go after finishing their round, usually the clubhouse or a bar where players relax, share stories, and enjoy time with friends.

We chose the name The 19th Hole because our space captures that same spirit. It’s not just about playing golf, it’s about the social experience that comes with it, relaxing, spending time with friends, and enjoying the game in a fun and welcoming environment.

6. How much is a game at The 19th Hole? And how long is the duration?

At The 19th Hole, the simulators are booked by the hour and by the number of players. This makes it flexible and affordable, especially when people come in groups.

Typically, one hour is enough time for a small group to enjoy a round or practice session, depending on the game mode they choose. Customers can also extend their time if they want to continue playing. The idea is to make the experience relaxed and accessible for everyone.

7. How many people can play on one simulator at the same time?

A single simulator can comfortably accommodate up to four players playing together in one round, which makes it perfect for friends or small groups.

However, more people can still join as spectators or rotate turns, so it often becomes a fun group activity where everyone participates and enjoys the experience together.

8. What has been the most unexpected lesson of this journey?

One of the most unexpected lessons has been how curious and open people are to trying new experiences. Even individuals who have never played golf before are willing to step in, try a few swings, and quickly become interested in the game.

It has been very encouraging to see people especially young people discover golf in a fun and accessible way. It reminded us that when new opportunities are created, people are often eager to learn and participate.

The 19th Hole is open Tuesday to Sunday from 11 am to 11:30pm.
