Bhutan Showcases “Saving Lives for A Happy Future” At World Expo 2025

Bhutan is taking part in the World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, at the special invitation of the Japanese government. Showcasing under the national theme “Saving Lives for a Happy Future,”’. Bhutan joins over 158 countries and international organisations at the global event, which opened on April 12. Held under the overarching theme “Designing Future Society for Our Lives,” the expo is expected to welcome more than 28 million visitors.

Global participation in Osaka Expo 2025

Bhutan’s participation in Expo 2025 offers a strategic platform to showcase the country’s unique development philosophy, grounded in Gross National Happiness. The Bhutan Pavillion highlights the nation’s rich cultural heritage, strong commitment to environmental conservation, good governance, and sustainable socio-economic progress, offering visitors a holistic view of Bhutan’s values and vision for the future.

Bhutan’s participation reflects close coordination among government agencies and active collaboration with the private sector, ensuring a unified and authentic showcase of the nation’s values and vision. Expo 2025 offers a strategic platform to deepen diplomatic ties, attract sustainable investments, and promote tourism in line with Bhutan’s commitment to responsible development.

The narratives and exhibits at the Pavillion reflect Bhutan’s commitment to balanced, inclusive, and forward-looking growth, underscoring its evolving presence on the global stage.

Additionally, Bhutan’s participation at Expo 2025 has been bolstered by the support of Bhutanese communities in Japan, Friends of Bhutan, the Kobe Bhutan Friendship Association, and the Consulate General Offices. These partnerships have played a crucial role in bridging cultural and logistical gaps, enriching visitor experiences, and ensuring the Pavillion genuinely reflects Bhutanese values and heritage.

Leadership and partnerships

World Expo 2025 in Osaka, Japan, was officially inaugurated on 12 April 2025 and Bhutan was represented at the inauguration by the Secretary of the Ministry of MoICE and accompanied by representatives from the Department of Trade, Department of Tourism, BCCI, and the private sector.

Situated in Commons-D of the Expo site, the Bhutan Pavillion highlights the country’s distinctive development philosophy through five key themes rooted in Gross National Happiness (GNH): Happy Future, Good Governance, Cultural Preservation and Promotion, Environmental Conservation, and Sustainable Socio-Economic Development.

Through immersive exhibits, videos, events, and interactive activities, the Pavillion weaves these themes into a cohesive narrative, providing visitors with an insightful and meaningful experience of Bhutan’s unique path to development.

Bhutan proudly celebrated its Expo National Day at Expo 2025 in Osaka on 2nd May 2025. The event was honored by the presence of the Honorable Lyonpo Namgyal Dorji, Minister of Industry, Commerce and Employment, and His Excellency Akiyoshi Kato, State Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan, alongside official delegates, Friends of Bhutan, and Bhutanese residents living in Japan.

Bhutan’s participation in Expo 2025 is spearheaded by the Department of Trade, MoICE, in collaboration with key government agencies and the private sector. The Commercial Pavillion at the Expo will be managed and operated by the BCCI.

Bhutan Pavillion experience

The Pavillion will serve as a dynamic platform to showcase, promote, and sell a diverse array of locally made Bhutanese products to a global audience. Beyond product promotion and sales, the Bhutan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) will play a pivotal role in facilitating strategic business engagements throughout the event. This includes organizing and coordinating Business-to-Business (B2B) and Business-to-Government (B2G) meetings designed to foster trade partnerships and attract investment opportunities.

Additionally, the Chamber will arrange targeted business promotion visits to Japan, enabling Bhutanese entrepreneurs and stakeholders to explore collaboration prospects and expand their market presence both within Japan and internationally.

Through Bhutan’s participation in Expo 2025, the objective is to present a clear and consistent message about sustainable development that integrates cultural preservation, environmental responsibility, and good governance. It aims to demonstrate that development can be pursued in a balanced manner, ensuring social well-being while protecting natural resources. The Pavillion reflects Bhutan’s commitment to these principles and offers a practical example of how policy and tradition can work together to support inclusive growth.

By sharing Bhutan’s approach and experiences, it hopes to contribute constructively to global conversations on development, encouraging mutual learning and cooperation. The message Bhutan wishes to leave with visitors is one of thoughtful progress, where economic development is aligned with environmental sustainability and social equity.

The Bhutan Pavillion and its commercial shop were officially inaugurated on 13 April by the Secretary and will remain open daily from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. The Expo will run until October 13, 2025 at Yumeshima, Osaka.

These themes are shared through a mix of storytelling, visuals, physical displays, and personal interaction with Pavillion staff. Visitors get to experience Bhutan’s natural beauty, food culture, and the special ties between Bhutan’s royal family and Japan’s imperial family, as well as Japanese technical support from agencies like JICA.

Miniature models of Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest) and a traditional Bhutanese house provide insight into the country’s identity and architectural heritage. A featured video on Gelephu Mindfulness City showcases Bhutan’s vision for a future city focused on wellbeing and sustainability. Cultural artifacts like the national dress (Gho and Kira) and traditional items such as koma, palang, dappa dranyen (lute), and chiwang (fiddle) offer a glimpse into Bhutanese daily life and craftsmanship.

Bhutan Pavillion Visitors for Osaka Expo 2025

From 21st to 27th July, the Bhutan Pavillion recorded 86,682 visitors. Between 28th July and 3rd August, the number of visitors rose to 89,945. The following week, from 4th to 10th August, attendance peaked at 98,058 visitors.

The Expo attracts an average of around 100,000 visitors each day at the Expo, with total attendance reaching approximately 3 million people so far.

Bhutan-Japan relations

Diplomatic relations between Japan and Bhutan were established on 28 March 1986.

Relations between Bhutan and Japan trace back to 1964, when Keiji Nishioka arrived in Bhutan as a Colombo Plan expert to support the country’s agricultural development.

In 1980, His Majesty the Fourth King bestowed upon him the title of Dasho in recognition of his remarkable contributions to modernising farming practices and improving the livelihoods of Bhutanese farmers. The late Dasho Nishioka, a pioneer of agricultural mechanisation, laid the foundations for Bhutan’s modern farming system, leaving an enduring legacy in the hearts of the Bhutanese people.

Over the years, Japan has supported Bhutan through grant aid and technical cooperation in areas such as human resource development, agriculture, energy, telecommunications, health, education, and infrastructure, notably roads and bridges contributing significantly to the nation’s socio-economic progress.
