Bhutan Unveils Its Most Advanced Integrated Check Post at Gelephu
Bhutan’s largest and most advanced Integrated Check Post in Gelephu nears completion, promising smarter border control, faster trade facilitation, and a modern gateway to Bhutan’s economic future.

The modest border posts of the past are fast becoming history as Bhutan’s largest and most advanced Integrated Check Post (ICP) in Gelephu edges towards completion. This cutting-edge facility is set to revolutionise cross-border movement and trade, combining modern aesthetics with smart technology and sustainable materials.
Towering Design with Durable Materials
Soaring to a height of 25 feet, the new gate is built from a combination of steel and prefabricated wood-plastic composite (WPC) materials, chosen for their resilience and insulation properties. The imposing structure marks not just an infrastructure upgrade, but a reimagining of Bhutan’s identity at its southern border.
Construction has reached its final phase, with finishing touches being applied. The handover of the facility is expected later this month.
Creating a Distinctive First Impression
Speaking on the project’s vision, Tshering Norbu, Gelephu Thrompon, stated, “The ICP gate is a vital piece of infrastructure for the upcoming Gelephu Mindfulness City. It’s the first thing visitors see when they enter Bhutan through this route, so it’s important that the gate creates an immediate sense of difference and distinction. We wanted people to feel like they’re stepping into a new experience almost like travelling abroad. Both us and the contractors have put in our best effort to make that vision a reality.”
Efficiency at the Core of Operations
Unlike the pedestrian terminal at Phuentshogling, Gelephu’s ICP features separate entry and exit lanes to allow for smoother traffic flow. The facility is equipped with advanced security measures, including airport-style metal detectors, X-ray scanners, and an extensive CCTV network to ensure the safety and efficiency of border operations.
Inside, travellers and cargo will benefit from eight E-gates and two manual gates on both the entry and exit sides. Additional facilities include a frisking room, detention room, server room, and currency exchange counter. For added convenience, amenities such as a cafeteria, vending machines, and toilets have been integrated into the design.
A Boon for Business and Trade
The new ICP is also expected to significantly streamline trade operations. As Tshering Norbu explained, “For businesses, this new gate will be a huge advantage. They’ll experience a much quicker and smoother process when importing or exporting goods. Essential documents can be accessed and processed faster, making trade facilitation more efficient than ever before.”
To accommodate larger freight vehicles, the ICP includes two motorised gates designed for smooth passage of trucks. The modern facility will replace Gelephu’s existing border gate, which has served the area for over four decades.
Technology-Driven and Staff-Friendly
At the heart of the ICP’s design is a strong focus on technology and operational efficiency. The use of prefabricated WPC and steel ensures both durability and a sleek, modern appearance. Enhanced insulation keeps interior temperatures comfortable for personnel working extended hours.
All essential services—including immigration, police, and relevant regulatory bodies—are housed within a single compound to facilitate seamless inter-agency coordination.
Part of Bhutan’s Broader Economic Vision
Constructed at a cost of approximately Nu 120 million, the project broke ground in February and has progressed steadily on schedule. As Bhutan gears up for greater regional integration and prepares for economic expansion through the Gelephu Mindfulness City project, this new ICP is set to serve not just as a border checkpoint, but as a symbol of Bhutan’s ambitions on the global stage.
