Gyalsung Skilling Programme Prepares 493 Gyalsups for National Service and Future Careers
Bhutan’s Gyalsung Skilling Programme equips 493 Gyalsups with hands-on training in traditional arts and modern technologies, preparing them for National Service and emerging job opportunities, including the Gelephu Mindfulness City project.

Gelephu – A total of 493 Gyalsups are embarking on a comprehensive skilling programme in Sarpang, aimed at preparing them for National Service as well as equipping them for the rapidly changing job market.
Official Launch of 15 Skilling Courses at JWPTI
The Gyalsung Headquarters, in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Skills Development (MoESD), officially launched 15 skilling courses yesterday at the Jigme Wangchuck Power Training Institute (JWPTI) located in Jigmeling, Dekiling.
Aiming to Build Careers and Support National Service
Through this programme, Gyalsups will gain hands-on skills that not only prepare them for National Service but also position them to benefit from emerging economic ventures, including the highly anticipated Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC) project.
The technical and vocational education and training (TVET) initiative begins with a two-week foundation course, after which participants will proceed to specialised training programmes lasting between six months and one year and eight months.
The foundation phase is designed to give Gyalsups an introduction to various fields, allowing them to select their area of specialisation based on their personal interests, strengths, and career aspirations.
“I see many opportunities coming up with GMC. I aspire to become an electrician,” shared Gyalsup Tandin Penjor, who had to leave school after Class 10 due to family challenges. “I’m deeply grateful for this skilling opportunity.”
Training Aligned with National Development Priorities
The Gyalsung office highlighted that the initial emphasis on construction and related trades reflects their critical role in national disaster response, infrastructure development, and the growing demand for skilled workers driven by major national initiatives.
This training not only aims to strengthen the Gyalsups’ professional skills and readiness for national service but also supports their personal growth. The JWPTI campus, along with its adjacent facility originally built as a thousand-bed quarantine centre, will host the training sessions and accommodate the Gyalsups.
Traditional Bhutanese Arts Meet Modern Technical Skills
Among the offered courses in traditional arts are Partha (Wood Carving) for 20 months, Troezo (Bronze and Silver Casting) for 15 to 20 months, Lhadri (Traditional Painting) and Jimzo (Clay Sculpting) for 12 months each, and Tshemdrup (Embroidery) for eight months.
The programme also covers a wide array of modern technical skills: six months in digital printing (including 3D printing, laser cutting, and ShopBot), seven months in mobile robotics, 12 months for transmission and distribution linemen, eight months for building wiring, and nine months in solar technology.
Additional courses include mechanical fitter training for nine months, plumbing and welding technology for 11 months each, construction carpentry for 14 months, and masonry technology for 15 months.
Developing Responsible and Capable Citizens
By offering both traditional craftsmanship and modern technical training, the programme aims to nurture a well-rounded workforce that can contribute to Bhutan’s development while preserving its rich cultural heritage.
The training also focuses on shaping young Bhutanese to become disciplined, responsible, and capable citizens, ready to serve and contribute meaningfully to the nation.
“This initiative marks an important milestone in fulfilling His Majesty the King’s unwavering vision of empowering Bhutanese youth to safeguard the country’s security, sovereignty, and prosperity,” stated a Gyalsung press release.
Participants who successfully complete the programme will be awarded National Certificate Level II (NC-II) after undergoing assessments and certification through the Bhutan Qualifications and Professionals Certification Authority, under the MoESD.
For those showing greater interest and aptitude, opportunities for advanced diploma-level training at JWPTI are also available, according to Gyalsung officials.
Collaboration with Desuung Skilling Programme to Expand Training Options
To broaden the scope of training, Gyalsung Headquarters is collaborating with the Desuung Skilling Programme (DSP), making use of its facilities and experienced trainers.
Currently, 20 Gyalsups are enrolled in multi-cuisine culinary training at the DSP Centre in Gyalpozhing, Mongar, with plans underway to introduce further courses in other specialisations.
Gyalsups participating in the GSP receive the same out-of-pocket allowances as those attending training at the Gyalsung Academy.
