Heli Bhutan Takes Flight: Private Helicopter Service Boosts Connectivity in Remote Bhutan

Heli Bhutan, the first private helicopter service in Bhutan, offers high-altitude flights to remote destinations with a brand-new Airbus H-125.

Heli Bhutan Takes Flight: Private Helicopter Service Boosts Connectivity in Remote Bhutan

Based in Ramtokto, Thimphu, Heli Bhutan introduces a dynamic alternative to the state-run Royal Bhutan Helicopter Services Limited. With growing demand for both routine and emergency aerial services, the arrival of a private operator is poised to ease pressure on existing resources.

A New Chapter in Bhutan’s Aviation

Launched on 22 April 2025, Heli Bhutan has already completed flights to over eight destinations—including remote and mountainous areas like Jomolhari, Sombaykha, Gasa, and Laya—within its first 18 days of service.

CEO Chencho Dorji shared that the service is performing above initial projections, averaging four to five flight hours per day. The company uses a high-altitude Airbus H-125 helicopter, capable of seating six passengers and navigating Bhutan’s rugged terrain with ease.

Accessible Yet Premium

Flight rates are set at USD 3,000 per hour for tourists and Nu 150,000 for Bhutanese nationals. Despite the premium price tag, the demand reflects a clear market need for such a service.

Heli Bhutan is fully staffed by Bhutanese nationals, with the 20-member team having undergone rigorous training in France and Nepal. An experienced British pilot currently oversees operations, ensuring global aviation standards are maintained.

A Diverse Service Portfolio

The company offers a wide range of services including scenic tours, passenger flights, aerial works, and emergency rescue missions, addressing both leisure and essential service needs.

The Bhutan Civil Aviation Authority granted Heli Bhutan its Air Operator Certificate on 22 April 2025. This followed a detailed audit covering everything from heliport infrastructure and safety procedures to maintenance and personnel qualifications.

With a clear vision to strengthen links between Bhutan’s remote communities and vital services, Heli Bhutan is setting a new benchmark in the country’s aviation sector. “We aim to bridge access gaps and make essential services more reachable,” Dorji affirmed.
