He may have left the world, but Anthony Bourdain's legacy lives on.

In the wake of the late chef’s death, Netflix has pledged to keep Anthony Bourdain’s “Parts Unknown” series on the streaming service for months to come, despite its initial plan of removing it on June 16 as part of their regular programme rotation.

“Parts Unknown” is an Emmy and Peabody award-winning show by the American culinary star that began in 2013, and explores cuisines and cultures that are off the radar of many Americans.

Meanwhile, CNN has continued to air new episodes from season 11 of “Parts Unknown” and an episode on Bhutan is expected to premiere on June 24. This episode will be the finale for the show.

What Bourdain did in Bhutan

In this episode of Bhutan, Bourdain and director Darren Aronofsky of movie Black Swan toured the Kingdom, visited Thimphu for a traditional Bhutanese meal, drove to Punakha to explore the village of Drukpa Kinley, popped by Bumthang to take part in a bamboo archery competition, and even shared a meal with yak herders.

Bourdain’s death stuns the world

News of the American culinary star’s apparent suicide last Friday has stunned people from all over the world, including fans and celebrities.

The 61-year-old died by hanging in a luxury hotel room in the French city of Strasbourg. His body has since been cremated in France and his ashes will be sent back to US.

His death comes just days after American fashion designer Kate Spade took her own life in her apartment in New York City.

Bourdain’s girlfriend, Italian actress Asia Argento, tweeted on Friday: “Anthony gave all of himself in everything that he did. His brilliant, fearless spirit touched and inspired so many, and his generosity knew no bounds. He was my love, my rock, my protector. I am beyond devastated. My thoughts are with his family. I would ask that you respect their privacy and mine.”

US President Donald Trump was among those saddened by the news. He said: “I want to extend to his family my heartfelt condolences.”

Bourdain is survived by his 11-year-old daughter, Ariane Bourdain.

From dishwasher to international stardom

Dubbed as the “original rock star of the culinary world” by the Smithsonian, the award-winning globe-trotter grew up in New Jersey and worked as a dishwasher in his teens, during which he became addicted to heroin.

He then studied at New York’s Vassar College but dropped out after two years. He eventually enrolled in culinary school and took on work as a line chef and sous chef at restaurants.

His life took a turn after he writing an article in the New Yorker about the secrets of kitchen life, which resulted in him working on his book “Kitchen Confidential: Adventures in the Culinary Underbelly”.

Bourdain then started hosting TV shows. “Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations” became a breakout hit, earning him two Emmy awards.

According to CNN, his shows have taken him to over 100 countries.

In his final weeks, he said he was especially looking forward to his episode in Hong Kong, where he teamed up with cinematographer Christopher Doyle, who lives there.

Bourdain wrote in a column for The Hollywood Reporter: “It was the most intensely satisfying experience of my professional life and a show that I am giddily, ecstatically proud of.

“I plan to get a Du Kefeng (Doyle’s Mandarin name) tattoo, in the original Mandarin, as soon as possible. As you might have guessed, I already have an Asia Argento tattoo.”
