Bhutan’s King Set to Visit Vietnam for Landmark Visit
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck of Bhutan will make a historic State visit to Vietnam from 18–22 August 2025, marking a new chapter in diplomatic, cultural, and tourism cooperation between the two nations.

At the gracious invitation of President Lương Cường and his spouse, Bhutan’s King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck and Queen Jetsun Pema will pay a State visit to Vietnam from 18 to 22 August 2025. This landmark visit, the first of its kind since Bhutan and Vietnam established diplomatic relations in 2012, signals a new chapter in the growing friendship between the two nations.
A Milestone in Bilateral Relations
The announcement was made by Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Phạm Thu Hằng during the ministry’s regular press briefing, noting the significance of this inaugural visit by Bhutan’s monarch. Over the past decade, Vietnam–Bhutan ties have steadily progressed, particularly through political dialogue, people-to-people exchanges and regional cooperation.
High-level visits and mutual goodwill have laid a strong foundation for further collaboration, with both sides regularly exchanging congratulatory messages on national days and key milestones.
Strengthening Political and Economic Ties
Despite their geographical distance, Vietnam and Bhutan have demonstrated increasing political engagement. Delegations at various levels have engaged in meaningful exchanges, reflecting shared values and aspirations.
Economically, two-way trade remains modest at approximately US$20,000 annually. Vietnam exports wood, machinery, equipment, tools, spare parts and other goods to Bhutan. There are currently two Vietnamese investment projects in Bhutan with a total registered capital of US$937,000—indicating the early stages of economic cooperation with room to grow.
Exploring New Frontiers of Cooperation
Spokesperson Phạm Thu Hằng highlighted several priority sectors for future collaboration, including agriculture, tourism, culture, education, science and technology, digital transformation, and green development. These themes will be discussed during the King’s meetings and official engagements in Vietnam.
King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck is scheduled to meet with President Lương Cường, Party General Secretary Tô Lâm, Prime Minister Phạm Minh Chính, and National Assembly Chairman Trần Thanh Mẫn, in addition to participating in a series of significant bilateral activities.
Spiritual Tourism and Cultural Exchange on the Rise
One of the most promising areas of cooperation lies in tourism—especially Buddhist and spiritual travel. Bhutan, often referred to as the “Kingdom of Happiness,” captivates Vietnamese travellers with its tranquil landscapes, deep-rooted spirituality, and meditative experiences.
Religion, particularly Buddhism, offers another natural bridge for engagement. Both Vietnam and Bhutan value the promotion of peace, compassion, and mindfulness, and are exploring avenues for deeper cooperation in religious dialogue, temple exchanges, and academic forums.
Education and human resource development are also on the agenda, with Bhutan expressing interest in learning from Vietnam’s development experience while deepening academic and cultural ties through scholarships and institutional collaborations.
Looking Ahead: A Partnership Rooted in Harmony
As Bhutan and Vietnam continue to enhance their diplomatic, economic and cultural ties, this historic State visit represents more than symbolic friendship—it’s a meaningful step towards a future of closer partnership grounded in mutual respect, shared values and common goals.
From sustainable development and spiritual tourism to cultural understanding and educational growth, both nations are poised to turn potential into progress.
