Bhutanese Agri-Food Entrepreneurs Explore New Trade Opportunities in Singapore

Bhutan showcased agri-food products at its first Mini Bhutan Market in Singapore, following a similar promotional event held in Bangkok during March this year.

Bhutanese Agri-Food Entrepreneurs Explore New Trade Opportunities in Singapore

Bhutanese agri-food products were introduced to Singaporean buyers and business leaders on 16 May 2026 through the first Mini Bhutan Market held in Singapore. The event brought together entrepreneurs, importers, and supporters of Bhutan to explore new trade opportunities and strengthen commercial partnerships between the two countries.

A total of 11 Bhutanese agri-food entrepreneurs such as Mountain Hazelnuts participated in the event, showcasing products ranging from processed foods to agricultural goods while presenting their business ideas to potential buyers, partners, and friends of Bhutan like Druk Asia in Singapore.

The Bhutanese delegation was led by Bhutan’s Minister for Agriculture and Livestock. The initiative was organised with support from partners in Singapore, JICA Bhutan, and the IFC-World Bank Group.

Expanding Bhutan’s International Market Presence

The Singapore event follows a similar Bhutan Mini-Market initiative held in Bangkok in March, where Bhutanese agri-entrepreneurs engaged with Thai businesses and consumers to explore export opportunities for Bhutanese agricultural products.

The Bangkok programme included a Bhutan Agri-Entrepreneurs’ Seminar, a Mini-Market showcase, business-to-business exchanges, and a networking dinner hosted at Lemon Farm in Bangkok. The event also featured discussions on Bhutanese agricultural exports and exchanges between Bhutanese entrepreneurs and Thai market stakeholders.

These initiatives reflect Bhutan’s broader effort to transition from subsistence farming toward a more market-oriented agricultural system while building stronger regional trade connections.

During the opening ceremony in Singapore, the Minister for Agriculture and Livestock highlighted Bhutan’s unique position in the global food market.

“Bhutan offers the world something special, a clean, natural, and high-quality food products grown in one of the last pristine environments on Earth,” the Minister said.

The Minister also noted that Bhutan’s agricultural development strategy continues to focus on sustainability, public health, and environmental responsibility while creating stronger economic opportunities for farmers and entrepreneurs.

Building Trade Partnerships in Southeast Asia

Singapore has become an increasingly important regional market for premium and sustainably produced food products. Bhutanese producers are now seeking to establish long-term commercial relationships with Singaporean importers and distributors.

Following the market event, a series of business-to-business meetings are expected to continue over the coming days. These meetings aim to connect Bhutanese entrepreneurs directly with Singapore-based buyers and market players.

Officials involved in the initiative said the collaboration reflects shared values between Bhutan and Singapore, particularly around sustainability, quality, and trust in food systems.

The earlier Bangkok initiative also demonstrated growing regional interest in Bhutanese agri-food products among Southeast Asian buyers and retailers.

Support from International Partners

The Department of Agricultural Marketing and Cooperatives (DAMC) acknowledged the role of development partners and regional collaborators in making the initiatives possible.

DAMC expressed appreciation to JICA Bhutan, the IFC-World Bank Group, and local partners for supporting the maiden Singapore event.

The department stated that it plans to continue promoting Bhutanese agri-food products in international markets through similar events and business engagement platforms in the future.

As Bhutan works to diversify its economy and strengthen agricultural exports, initiatives such as the Mini Bhutan Market could help create greater international visibility for Bhutanese products while opening new opportunities for local entrepreneurs.
